(San Juan, PR) – The executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) Carla Campos, awarded doctor Rigoberto Ramos González and his wife Magda Nieves Rivera, a certificate recognizing Hacienda La Mocha as the newest participant in PRTC’s Agrotourism Certification Program. The recently inaugurated facilities offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy an eco-friendly activity that combines the traditions of both a coffee hacienda and a guest house, with a variety of agrotourism activities on its 45-acre site.
Located in Ponce, Hacienda La Mocha is of great historic value as it was considered the socio-economic center of the town’s mountain area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. La Mocha operated not only as coffee plantation, but also as a school and clinic to nearby communities. After receiving technical consultancy from the Quality and Sustainable Tourism Divisions of the Tourism Company, this family-owned enterprise succeeded in preserving the site’s heritage and history into a first-class tourism facility. The proprietors also advise from the Department of Agriculture of Puerto Rico and collaborated with students and professors from the Faculty of Architecture from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico.
“It is very gratifying, and we are very proud to welcome Hacienda La Mocha to PRTC’s Agrotourism Certification Program. This family initiative is exemplary as it integrates all Sustainable Tourism principles, achieves high-quality standards and offers its visitors an amazing agrotourism experience. We will continue to support and incentivize small business entrepreneurs like the Ramos-Nieves family to position Puerto Rico as a solid and resilient travel destination as established by Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s public policy”, stated Carla Campos, Executive Director of PRTC.
“It is a pleasure and an honor to be part of the Agrotourism Certification Program of Puerto Rico Tourism Company. This certification gives us the opportunity to market ourselves on an international level as a first-rate agrotourism installation offering visitors an excellent and highly-specialized learning experience about agriculture and the special type of coffee Hacienda La Mocha produces while enjoying Nature”, said Dr. Rigoberto Ramos, owner of Hacienda La Mocha.
Hacienda La Mocha offers interpretive excursions that showcase the skills and methods with which the plantation’s coffee is processed. The tours also include bird and butterfly identification and observation. The facilities are noted for the rehabilitation of the “Casa Grande” (the main house of the plantation); the use of renewable energy; rainwater collection and use; growing coffee under the tree canopy; and vast knowledge of agriculture activity and application.
The mission of the Agrotourism Certification Program of Puerto Rico Tourism Company is to promote the sustainable development of agrotourism in Puerto Rico using appropriate standards to preserve natural and cultural resources and guarantee visitors’ satisfaction during the enjoyment of said activities. The tourism activity provides additional income to supplement existing agricultural activity. Agricultural activities include planting and harvesting, animal husbandry, fishery and aquaculture, hydroponics, and ecoagriculture.
